Welcome to the School of International Culture and Communication

The School of International Culture and Communication at Beijing City University was established in July 2020 through the merger of the former School of International Languages and Cultures (founded in 1989) and the Department of Communication (founded in 2006). Against the backdrop of the New Liberal Arts initiative, the school explores the integrated development of foreign language and literature disciplines with communication studies, aiming to cultivate international, applied, and interdisciplinary talents who meet societal needs.

The school’s disciplines span two major fields—literature and art—covering first-level disciplines such as journalism and communication, foreign languages and literatures, and drama and film studies. It has established a distinctive, well-grounded disciplinary system with prominent strengths, offering seven undergraduate programs: Communication, Radio and Television Directing, English, French, Spanish, German, and Translation. In collaboration with several renowned international universities, the school provides credit-recognized international programs in finance, accounting, communication, animation, etc.. Currently, it hosts a master’s program in Drama and Film Studies, as well as two Beijing first-class undergraduate programs in Communication and English.

Adhering to an interdisciplinary development philosophy, the school fosters collaboration, support, and resource-sharing among its programs. Aligned with the needs of regional economic and cultural development and the demands of the digital and intelligent era, the school distinguishes itself by cultivating talents in intelligent urban cultural communication for Beijing. Its educational goal is to nurture interdisciplinary and international talents with competencies in “digital-intelligent communication + audiovisual production expertise + foreign language proficiency”, preparing outstanding applied professionals proficient in digital intelligence technologies, audiovisual production skills, and foreign language communication for Beijing and beyond.

The school boasts a high-quality teaching team with a balanced structure in terms of academic qualifications, age, and professional titles. Its faculty members are characterized by strong teaching capabilities, practical guidance skills, interdisciplinary expertise, and international exposure. Besides, over ten foreign teachers from countries such as the U.S., U.K., France, Spain, Germany, and Japan further enhance the team’s international, interdisciplinary, and applied nature. Among the full-time faculty, there are one Beijing Distinguished Teaching Master, one Beijing Young Distinguished Teaching Master, two Beijing Curriculum Ideology and Politics Teaching Masters, three Beijing Young Elite Program recipients, one Beijing Outstanding Teacher, one Beijing Advanced Individual in Professional Ethics, and one Beijing Outstanding Moral Education Worker. In the past three years, the faculty has won nearly 30 provincial and ministerial-level teaching achievement awards, with multiple faculty members receiving top prizes in national teaching and professional competitions.

The school places great emphasis on research and the transformation of research outcomes into teaching, integrating teaching and research through platforms such as research institutes and centers. The Beijing Urban Culture Digital-Intelligent Communication Research Institute, affiliated with the school, focuses on digital-intelligent urban cultural communication, delving into urban cultural dissemination, city image shaping, urban branding, international city image communication, urban public opinion monitoring, smart city development, and online cultural communication, etc.. In collaboration with China National Committee for Terminology in Science and Technology, the school has established the Science Culture Communication Center. It has also been designated by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation as a base for international Chinese education and the global dissemination of Chinese culture. Furthermore, in partnership with the China Association for Promoting the Commendation of Martyrs, a national first-level association, the school co-founded the Heroic Spirit Media Convergence Base to advance theoretical research and practical exploration. To date, the school has published nearly 100 high-level academic papers and undertaken over 200 teaching and research projects at various levels.

The school prioritizes applied talent cultivation, equipped with the Modern Media Practice Teaching Center and the International Language and Culture Practice Teaching Center, fully meeting students’ practical needs both inside and outside the classroom. These facilities feature advanced digital-intelligent technologies, comprehensive functions, standardized layouts, and sophisticated management. They are industry-aligned with the current mainstream media’s digital and intelligent technology ecosystems, ensuring seamless compatibility. This provides robust hardware and software support for students to develop practical skills in urban cultural digital-intelligent communication. The Media Convergence Lab and the Intelligent Language Service Lab also house various professional studios, where instructors guide students in extracurricular internships, discipline competitions, and commissioned social projects, enhancing their professional competencies, social responsibility, and professional qualities. Through these studios, students have won over 1,500 awards in competitions at various levels, including more than 100 provincial and ministerial-level first, second, and third prizes. In addition, they have completed 108 social service projects, receiving numerous achievement application certificates and letters of appreciation, which earns the school a strong reputation.

Leveraging extensive industry-university partnerships, the school has established over 100 internship bases with cultural and communication institutions such as Beijing Radio & Television Station, China International Communication Center, Global Times, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, and Transn. Experts from media, publishing, and enterprises are invited as industry mentors to guide student internships, co-teach courses, or supervise student projects. Under this deep industry-university-research collaboration model, partner organizations participate in student development comprehensively and throughout the entire process, jointly cultivating applied talents suited to the digital and intelligent era.

Embracing an open and international educational philosophy, the school emphasizes broadening students’ global perspectives and cross-cultural communication skills, evolving into a distinctive base for international talent cultivation. It has established partnerships with over 40 universities in 12 countries, including the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, and Germany, as well as in Hong Kong and Macau, China. Collaborative programs include credit recognition, overseas master’s degree programs, international competitions, joint workshops, and overseas internships and employment.
